Spider veins are mostly found on the legs and face. They are the cause of a dilation of a small group of blood vessels close to the surface of the skin. They appear like purple or reddish sunbursts, or a web-like pattern.
Varicose veins are effects of enlarged or swollen blood vessels that are caused by a weakening in the vein valves or wall. Unlike the spider veins, varicose veins are found deeper in the skin and they look raised and blue.
Although the cause of the swelling is still unknown (hormonal changes, heredity and pregnancy are said to be contributing elements), doctors believe it is best to have the veins removed before they trigger damages.
Treatments like the microsclerotherapy, surgical ligation and stripping, intense pulsed light therapy and laser surgery and electrodesiccation are said to be the most effective ways to remove varicose and spider veins.
Microsclerotherapy. It is a less invasive, effective procedure that involves the injection of a solution through a small needle to the veins, causing them to eventually and permanently fade.
Surgical ligation and stripping. The surgeon makes an incision in the skin and takes out or ties off the blood vessel.
Laser surgery and intense pulsed light therapy. Using its intense pulsating light or high intensity laser beams, the spider and varicose are instantly being removed.
Electrodessication. This procedure involves using an electrical current to seal off the veins in the skin.
