It is the leader in the automobile insurance industry in the United States since 1942, providing insurance for more car, watercraft and homeowners than any other insurance provider in the United States. It is also the leader in the insurance industry in Canada. It is a Fortune 500 company and ranked 31st in that list as of 2009. State Farm is also considered as the largest property and casualty insurance firm by the Fortune Global 500.
The company was established in 1922 by George J. Mecherle as a mutual automobile insurance company that specialized in auto insurance for farmers. Since then, State Farm has expanded its range of services into other types of insurance, including house and life insurance, as well as financial services. The company has grown into an industry leader with 67,000 employees and 17,000 agents, and is currently insuring about 40 million vehicles.
