More than 25% of the American populace suffer insomnia for various reasons. Sufferers filled over 50 million prescriptions for sleeping medications in 2009. Sleeping pills don’t actually solve a person’s chronic problem. Some specialists even said they’re not worth taking at all.
With the advances of technology, insomniacs can now fight this issue without taking medications by enrolling at an online sleeping program developed by sleep expert Dr. Gregg Jacobs.
Dr. Jacobs from the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester has offered this sleeping alternative called cognitive behavioral therapy. It is a five-week program that can be completed either online or in person.
“A lot of people don’t have the time or the ability to come over here to the sleep clinic for four or five visits,” said Dr. Jacobs.
Lessons in the program include:
• Getting up at the same time each day.
• Keeping a sleep journal.
• Not staying in bed if not asleep and doing something productive for half an hour.
• Practicing relaxation.
Jacobs explained that there were more people comfortable communicating via online than in person.
One of the recent results of a sleep diary study showed that 81% of the enrollees who registered in the therapy online have improved their sleeping habits.
